Did you make any New Year’s resolutions?

We are well into the New Year. I hope your New Year is off to a good start. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions for your training program this year? It’s not too late if you haven’t. If you did, have you already gotten off-track and distracted by new projects and new mandates from your firm? I get it, it happens!

One of the ways that I coped with ever-changing priorities was to diary my goals in 30, 60 or 90 day increments on my calendar and I made sure that I set a reminder notice. In the notes, I included details that would help me recall why I thought this goal was important enough to record and review later.

When you diary your goal, take a minute to think about how it ties to back to your firm’s business needs and make note of that. This is important because everything you do should align to a specific business needs and those change over time. And of course, who were you thinking about at the time. Was the audience the users in your firm, your training team, firm management? What was motiving you to record this goal?

The idea is to make the note detailed enough to take you back to the moment when you took the time to record the goal. If the time is right and the reasons are still valid, go for it. If it isn’t the right time, adjust the date to a future time and be confident that you aren’t missing out on your great ideas when the time is right!
