So this week at team TutorPro HQ we’re looking at assessment again… “Why” we hear you cry? “You’ve already explained that assessment’s not a dirty word!” That is, indeed, true. However in that blog we considered how assessment can be used as a positive tool when employed in the right way. This week we’re going to take the next step, we’re going to assume you’ve agreed with us that assessment is a great tool, and now we’re going to look at how to choose the right type of assessment for you! Unfortunately this is a much harder task than deciding assessment’s not a bad idea in general.
TutorPro has been developing custom assessments for many years and over the past 18 months, we’ve been delivering LTC4 assessments too. Why both you ask? And how do we decide which solution to go for?
You might have heard of the LTC4 Core Competencies. LTC4 is a coalition made up of individuals from law firms, legal departments, who have drawn up a set of core competencies. There are great benefits to joining LTC4, we are vendor members because we support their mission. However LTC4 Certification isn’t right for everyone, many members of our Client Family have decided to use our custom assessment solution to build an assessment program of their own.
Here are some factors to consider:
Whilst the LTC4 CCs can be modified, you must meet 85% of the ‘Y’s they have defined in the workflows, if this fits with your training goals, excellent! However, perhaps you want something to meet your firm’s pre-existing training curriculum/philosophy, in which case custom assessments is better for you.
Are you being asked by clients to provide a certification with third party oversight for supply chain management reasons? If so, LTC4’s a great way to go. If you’re just being asked to demonstrate that you have an efficiency management or assurance program in place then custom assessments might be more suitable!
How much time do you have? Our experience over the past 18 months of supporting LTC4 is that you can assess on no more than three Core Competencies a year. The Core Competencies are detailed which is great but this means a robust program with training and building skills around the assessments of course takes time. Let’s take, for example, the Legal Documents Core Competency. TutorPro has broken this down into five manageable assessments, each of which is 20 to 40 minutes long. This is without any training time. If you have a culture of eLearning already in place this might not be a challenge, however if you’re still building that culture it might be worth going for custom assessments. You could always look at LTC4 in the future.
Whichever way you decide to go, TutorPro has a process in place to make this seamless for you. All of our assessments, whether LTC4 or not, only take seven to 10 days to turn around and our eLearning courseware will map to both custom assessments and LTC4.
